Rooting For The Little Guy

What's great about college basketball?  Not just the great rivalries or power conferences of teams, but for my money, my favorite thing is the little guys.  Not players, but teams from mid major conferences or even conferences that people have never heard of cracking the top 25 and showing the rest of Duke, North Carolina, Pittsburgh, UConn, and Louisville, that the little guys can play with the biggies.  Davidson is the perfect team at this time that fits the mold; ranked 24th in the AP poll.

Davidson is a tiny college outside of Charlotte with one big player who could very well be a lottery pick when he makes himself available in the NBA Draft.  Stephen Curry is what makes college basketball so awesome.  Son of former NBA star Dell Curry, Stephen is a chip off the old block, but even better.  He brought his team within a game of the Final Four last year, losing to eventual champion Kansas.  Now a Junior, Curry is looking for more success at a school that has less than 3,000 students on the entire campus.  Curry is the most famous person at the school and could be the most famous ever when his college career is all said and done.

I remember schools like Tulane when Perry Clark was there.  The Green Wave was ranked and would knock off teams in the NCAA's, or the College of Charleston when John Kresse was dancing on the sidelines or even George Washington when now FAU coach Mike Jarvis was there.  They were the tiny schools that could play with the the powers and sometimes overtake them too.  Now Davidson is getting its turn and it's great to see.   So don't count out the little guy.
