Some windchop on the way by the weekend...Surf Forecast Update

Happy Earth Day!

I had the morning off Wednesday and it was so gorgeous out I thought I'd go to the beach before work.  I had a hunch so I brought the log and to my surprise, there was a fun little clean-ish wave coming in!  Only about 1-2' but the 9'0 log had no problem catching the tiny waves.  Plus, it was pretty lined up so I caugh some fun rides!  The wind came up a little later but the water was CRYSTAL clear, it was amazing really.  only one other dude out on Palm Beach.  Don't believe me?...here are a fwe pics from today:

(some clean-up sets were knee-thigh high...LOL)

The Forecast:

Thursday:  Maybe something longboardable at teh right tide...nothing much though.

Friday:  Building East windchop.  About thigh-waist high by the end of the day.

Saturday:  East wind keeps blowing and picks up a smidge.  Waist-stomach and choppy.

Sunday-Monday: East wind picks up even more.  12-22kts.  Choppy but probably fun waist-chest at your favorite windchop sandbar.

Tuesday:  some small leftovers, knee-waist+ windchop.

So, not the greatest waves in the forecast but at least it's not flat.  I'm looking forward to getting wet again!  see you in the water

lots going on around town so check it out:

Surfers For Autism is an organization founded  by South Florida's local Trespass Surf Club in early 2008.  Inspired by one of our club member's own journey with an autistic brother, the idea to host an event introducing the sport of surfing to local familes with autistic children was born.

Surfers For Autism holds an annual event (Saturday, May 2nd at Deerfield Beach) that consists of two elements. The first is our kids/surfers. Its very simple; bring your child to the beach, we register him/her as a surfer, pair them with a highly qualified and trained surf instructor along with one to two volunteers and they are surfing. The second element is a beach party/fundraiser consisting of lots of activities for the kids, live music and raffles from our sponsor donations through out the day. Lunch is provided to all of registered familes.

We are all very passionate about this and are positive that what we do makes a difference. You can see it on the faces of every child!

100% of every dollar that is raised by Surfers For Autism is proudly donated to Autism Speaks Foundation to raise awareness and find a cure.

Lets Surf For A Cure.

Antique Surfboard Being Presented for Exhibition
at Museum of the City of Lake Worth

4-21-09 - For Immediate Release

Lake Worth, Florida

Palm Beach County Surfing Pioneer Dave Aaron will be in Lake Worth on Friday, April 24th at 3pm to present his antique balsa wood surfboard for exhibition at The Museum of the City of Lake Worth.  Mr. Aaron was one of the first people to ride a surfboard in Palm Beach County and is participating in a local project to preserve the history of local surfing.  The antique surfboard is ten feet long and has been meticulously restored to its original 1940's condition.  Possibly shaped by one of the world's most famous early surfboard shapers, Bob Simmons in California, the board traveled to Hawaii before Dave began riding it at the original Palm Beach Pier as a teenager in the 1940's.

Mr. Aaron is an inductee to the East Coast Legends Surfing Hall of Fame.  In the mid-1960's he was a founder of the Palm Beach County Surfing Association, which included more than a dozen local surfing clubs from Boca Raton to Jupiter.  At that time the Association spearheaded a legal challenge to a surfing ban by the Town of Palm Beach, and won the case in the Florida Supreme Court with the pro-bono help of a then-young attorney, Joel Daves.

Dave Aaron will be attending meetings of the newly-formed non profit organization, The Palm Beach County Surfing History Project, while in town.  The group is organizing exhibitions of local surfing photos, boards and memorabilia from local collections in Palm Beach County.  For more information visit the website at: surfhistoryproject.org

The public presentation will take place at the museum on Friday, April 24th at 3 P.M.  Mr. Aaron will be available for interviews and photos at that time.  The Museum, located at the City Hall Annex, (414 Lake Avenue) showcases the history and culture of Lake Worth and the surrounding areas.  Displays throughout seven rooms are packed with artifacts and photographs of early Lake Worth.

Admission to Lake Worth's Historical Museum is free. Hours are 10 to 4 weekdays (closed noon to 1 P.M.).

Opposing Plant Expansion

Withdrawal of wastewater permit application and history of non-compliance spur action

Ft. Pierce, FL -- It was announced today that Conservation Alliance of St. Lucie County, Indian Riverkeeper and the Surfrider Foundation Treasure Coast Chapter will organize and coordinate their efforts to oppose the expansion of a bleach manufacturing plant.

“We recently learned that Allied Universal Corporation has withdrawn its application for a wastewater permit because they think they don’t need it,” said Kevin Stinnette, the president of the Conservation Alliance of St. Lucie County. “They have worked to quadruple their size before they comply with existing permit requirements. Now they say they don’t need a wastewater permit at all.”

Research conducted by the well-respected environmental groups has brought forth information that is highly disturbing. Allied has a long history of spills, leaks, accidents and environmental non compliance with warning letters and consent orders littering its DEP files.  These transgressions are not only in the St. Lucie area, but also throughout the state of Florida. Yet the Ft. Pierce Utilities Authority has chosen to rely on them to police their own pollution. Now Allied is working to avoid even the anemic constraints of the permit process.

"I don't believe our local agency, and elected officials had, or considered, all the information on this company's environmental record. If they had, I don't see how any permits could have been issued." commented Indian Riverkeeper George Jones. “I want to make sure the public, and our officials charged with the protection of the public health and our environment, understand all the numerous facts that have been left out of this process.”

Indian Riverkeeper Jones has already sent DEP Secretary Mike Sole and DEP Southeast District Director Jack Long a request that Allied be required to have a permit for any injection of waste material from their site to the FPUA injection well system. They will also demand DEP take the necessary actions needed to force the correction of all outstanding violations on the current site in Ft Pierce.

According to the National Archives and Records Administration, as early as 2001, migration of injected effluent has been documented or was suspected to be occurring in 42 of the 81 operational deep-injection sites, which are located primarily along south Florida's coast. “The same subsurface flow paths that supplied historic pristine ground water to coastal areas now may be points of preferential induced discharge for fluid wastes injected into wells along south Florida's coast” said Dr. Sydney Bacchus, a hydroecologist with Applied Environmental Services, LLC.

“Any company with a history of violations like Allied Universal should not be trusted on their own accord to send their waste to the City of Fort Pierce to be disposed of in their Injection Well.  It has already been proven by University of South Florida in a comprehensive study that these deep wells can leak what is injected into them, sometimes within hours after injection. Citizens of this county should not be susceptible to the risk of waste from Allied moving into our water system, followed by a massive risk to our Intercoastal and ocean,” said Kevin Murray, Chair for The Surfrider Foundation, Treasure Coast Chapter.

These violations have been left uncorrected for way too long, and should be linked to any permit Allied seeks. Over the next few weeks, the groups intend to take their message to the Board of County Commissioners, Ft. Pierce Public Utilities Authority and the citizens of the County.
